How did Des Moines become capitol of Iowa? In 1855 Iowa chose Polk County over a Jasper County selection, Gov. Grimes signs a bill from the Fifth General Assembly, placing the Capitol within two miles of the Raccoon Forks. A group of Des Moines citizens build a temporary Capitol (later bought by the state) near where the Soldiers and Sailors monument now stands. That temporary capitol was used for 30 years, until destroyed by fires.
Central Iowa is home to many attractions. Iowa has the nation’s largest state fair in the nation. The Iowa State Fair brings in nearly 1 million visitors a year during its week-long celebration. Iowa also is home to the Des Moines Botanical Center (indoor rainforest), Blank Park Zoo, Adventure Land Park, Prairie Meadow Race Track and Casino, Iowa Speedway, Saylorville Lake Marina, Big Creek State Park, Easter Lake Park, Grey’s Lake Park, Living History Farms, Fort Des Moines Hotel and Military Base, Camp Dodge Army Reserves, Drake University, DMAAC College, and more attractions. Downtown Des Moines is undergoing some construction right now to become a more economically and environmentally friendly city. The downtown area has an extensive sky-walk system that joins many of the major buildings and business in the downtown area. Along the sky-walk enjoy shopping in the retail districts and enjoy lunch or dinner at any of the restaurants along the way.
Central Iowa is home to many business headquarters. Hy-Vee has become one of the leaders in the grocery store business in the mid-west and they make their home right here in the Des Moines metro. Casey’s General Store has thousands of convenience stores across the mid-west as well and their headquarters is just north of Des Moines in Ankeny. Wells Fargo has recently moved there headquarters to West Des Moines and brought thousands of jobs to Polk and Dallas county. Don’t forget Principal Financial has its headquarters in a high rise building that you can see from miles in the middle of the Des Moines downtown district.
